How to Screen Sales Representative Resumes
Sales resumes are written by people who sell for a living, so they read well by default. Everyone is a "top performer" who "exceeded quota." The screen that matters cuts through the polish to the numbers: what was the quota, what was the attainment, and what was the context that makes either credible.

Core qualifications
- Quota attainment as a percentage, with the actual quota number when possible
- Deal size and sales cycle that match your motion (SMB transactional vs enterprise complex)
- Consistency across multiple periods, not one breakout quarter
- Ramp evidence — how fast they got to full productivity in past roles
- Industry or buyer-persona overlap with what they'd be selling for you
Red flags
What to watch for in sales representative resumes
- "Consistently exceeded quota" with no percentage or dollar figure anywhere
- President's Club one year, then unexplained gaps or a string of short tenures
- Deal sizes and cycle lengths that don't match the role they're applying for
- Activity metrics (calls, emails) substituted for outcomes (revenue, attainment)
- Title says Account Executive but the achievements describe SDR/BDR top-of-funnel work
Worth verifying
Claims that are easy to write, hard to back up
- "Exceeded quota by 150%" — on what quota, and was it a full year?
- "Closed $2M in ARR" — how many deals, and what was the average size?
- "Built the territory from scratch" — inherited pipeline, or truly greenfield?
- "Top performer on the team" — out of how many reps, ranked by what?
The fast way
Screen sales representatives faster
For sales reqs, the strongest signal is a number with context. A rep who writes "117% of a $1.4M quota, 3 years running, 60-day cycle" is telling you something verifiable; "crushed it every quarter" is telling you they can write a resume. Rank for attainment plus motion-fit, and flag any resume where the achievements have no denominator.
