How to Screen Account Executive Resumes

Account executive resumes are written to close — they read like a strong pitch, and every AE "consistently exceeded quota." A stronger screen separates closers who carried and hit a real number from reps who rode marketing-sourced pipeline or sat in a coordinating seat. Pin down the quota, the attainment, and where the pipeline actually came from.

What to screen for

Core qualifications

  • Closed-won quota attainment as a percentage, with the actual quota and the period behind it
  • Average deal size and sales-cycle length that match your motion (transactional vs complex enterprise)
  • Full-cycle ownership where the role needs it — sourcing, running, and closing, not just taking handoffs
  • Pipeline-source mix: how much was self-sourced versus marketing- or SDR-fed
  • Win rate and consistency across multiple quarters, not a single breakout deal

Red flags

What to watch for in account executive resumes

  • "Consistently exceeded quota" with no percentage, dollar figure, or quota number anywhere
  • One monster deal carrying an entire year, with nothing behind it before or after
  • Deal sizes and cycle lengths that don't match the role's motion
  • Closed-won credited with no mention of how much pipeline was self-sourced
  • Title says Account Executive but the wins read as SDR-fed order-taking

Worth verifying

Claims that are easy to write, hard to back up

  • "Exceeded quota by 140%" — on what quota number, and was it a full year?
  • "Closed $3M in new business" — how many deals, and what was the average size?
  • "Self-sourced my pipeline" — what share of closed-won did they originate themselves?
  • "Full-cycle AE" — did they source, run, and close, or take SDR/marketing handoffs and close only?

The fast way

Screen account executives faster

For AE reqs, the differentiator beyond attainment is where the pipeline came from. A rep at 112% of a $1.2M new-business quota who self-sourced 40% of closed-won is a different hire from one who closed only SDR- and marketing-fed deals at the same number. Rank for attainment, motion-fit, and self-sourced share, and probe any AE whose wins have no quota and no pipeline origin behind them.
