How to Screen Medical Assistant Resumes

Medical assistant resumes hide a fork in the road: some MAs are clinical (vitals, injections, phlebotomy, rooming patients) and some are administrative (scheduling, insurance, front desk), and the title alone won't tell you which. The screen that matters first decides which half of the job you're hiring for, then confirms the certification and the hands-on skills behind it. Advancing an admin-only MA for a clinical pod wastes an interview slot you can't spare.

What to screen for

Core qualifications

  • Current certification where the role requires it — CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), or CCMA (NHA)
  • The right clinical/administrative balance for your setting, not a generalist blur
  • Hands-on clinical skills named specifically (vitals, EKG, phlebotomy, injections, rooming)
  • EHR fluency in your system (Epic, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks) for day-one productivity
  • Specialty or setting fit — pediatrics, OB/GYN, urgent care, primary care — to your practice

Red flags

What to watch for in medical assistant resumes

  • Certification implied but never named, or listed without the issuing body or status
  • "Clinical and administrative experience" with no depth shown in either
  • Phlebotomy or injection skills claimed with no volume or setting behind them
  • No EHR named for a role defined by charting and patient flow
  • Externship-only experience presented as if it were a full clinical workload

Worth verifying

Claims that are easy to write, hard to back up

  • "Certified medical assistant" — through which body (AAMA, AMT, NHA), and current?
  • "Performed phlebotomy" — what volume per day, and on which patient populations?
  • "Clinical and administrative duties" — what was the actual split day to day?
  • "Proficient in Epic" — which modules, and did they room and chart independently?

For medical assistant reqs, separate the certification gate from the skills fit. If your state or practice requires a CMA or RMA, an uncredentialed resume shouldn't reach the hiring manager no matter how warm it reads.
