- Spend under management and the categories owned (direct/indirect, IT, services, MRO) matched to your need
- Savings with method and baseline — negotiated, cost-avoidance, or PPV — not a bare percentage
- Sourcing ownership: RFx, supplier selection, and negotiation led, not just PO processing
- Supplier management depth — contracts, SLAs, performance reviews, risk — beyond transactional buying
- Systems and process fluency (Coupa, Ariba, SAP) and category/market knowledge for the spend
Red flags
What to watch for in procurement specialist resumes
- "Delivered $X in savings" with no baseline, category, or method of calculation
- Purchase-order processing and requisition handling presented as strategic sourcing
- Spend managed and categories never stated — the scope of the role is invisible
- "Managed suppliers" with no contracts, SLAs, or performance work behind it
- A tools-and-certs list (Coupa, CPSM) with no sourcing event or negotiation outcome attached
Worth verifying
Claims that are easy to write, hard to back up
- "Delivered savings" — against what baseline, in which category, and measured how?
- "Managed supplier relationships" — how many, under what spend, with what contracts?
- "Led sourcing" — ran the RFP and negotiation, or executed an awarded contract?
- "Reduced costs" — hard negotiated savings, or cost avoidance, and on what spend base?
