How to Screen QA Engineer Resumes

QA resumes blur manual testing, automation engineering, and SDET work under one title, and the keyword lists rarely tell you which. A candidate can name Selenium, Cypress, and Playwright and still have only ever clicked through test cases by hand. The screen that matters separates people who built test automation that runs in CI from people who wrote tickets after manually checking the build.

What to screen for

Core qualifications

  • Clear evidence of which QA they are — manual, automation, or SDET — not an ambiguous blend
  • Real automation built: framework, language, and suites that run in CI, not just tool names
  • Coverage or quality metrics — defect escape rate, coverage %, flake reduction — with numbers
  • Test strategy depth: what to automate, what to leave manual, and how they decided
  • Domain and stack fit — testing the kind of product (web, API, mobile) and tools you actually use

Red flags

What to watch for in qa engineer resumes

  • Automation tools listed (Selenium, Cypress) with no suite, framework, or CI integration shown
  • "Tested the application" with no coverage, defect, or quality number anywhere
  • Manual click-through work presented as automation engineering
  • "Wrote test cases" with no sense of strategy, scale, or what was caught before release
  • A long tool list with no indication of which they actually built suites in

Worth verifying

Claims that are easy to write, hard to back up

  • "Built test automation" — which framework, in what language, running in CI on every commit?
  • "Tested the full application" — automated coverage of what percent, or manual click-through?
  • "Reduced defects" — escape rate from what to what, measured against which releases?
  • "Proficient in Selenium / Cypress" — wrote the framework, or ran existing scripts?

The fast way

Screen QA engineers faster

For QA reqs, first decide whether you need an automation engineer or a manual tester, then read the resume against that — the titles are interchangeable but the skills are not. Rank on automation actually built and running in CI, plus a quality metric with a number. "Tested everything" describes effort, not outcome. Verify the automation depth in the screen; clicking through a UI and building a Playwright suite are very different jobs wearing the same title.

Resume Autopsy ranks your whole qa engineer applicant pool against the job description in minutes — a 0–100 fit score and a MATCH / PARTIAL / MISS checklist with evidence quotes for every candidate, so you know who to interview first and can defend the call.
